CCI Paid Post-graduate Internship Program

CCI's paid post-graduate internships are 1-year appointments for Canadian citizens or landed immigrants who have recently (within the last 5 years) completed a degree program from a recognized university or a 2-year diploma program from a recognized post-secondary college in a specialization related to conservation. Internships are available in conservation or conservation science.

CCI Paid Post-graduate Internship Program

Objectives
The objectives of the paid post-graduate internship program are:

  • to provide a bridge between academic studies and professional practice to ensure that the heritage community has access to fully trained individuals in the conservation field
  • to provide paid work experience to recent graduates of recognized conservation or science training programs
  • to ensure the dissemination and transfer of expertise
  • to provide service to the Canadian heritage community through active participation in achieving CCI’s operational goals and objectives

Interns will be expected to participate in and contribute to day-to-day lab activities (treatments, consultations, research projects, lab maintenance, surveys, site work, seminar preparation and delivery, etc.). Their particular treatment or research interests will be considered; however, it may not be possible to accommodate them.

Duration
Internships have a maximum duration of 12 months.

To be eligible to apply, candidates must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
  • have graduated within the last 5 years from a recognized university or college in a program related to conservation
  • have recent (within the last 2 years) conservation experience that may have been obtained through a combination of post-secondary studies, volunteer work, or extra-curricular activities

Intern Responsibilities
After completing their internship, interns are required to produce a brief report, suitable for publication on the CCI website, which describes the work and/or research they did during their time at CCI.

Application Cycle
Available internships will be advertised on the CCI website each winter. Interested candidates should visit the site regularly or sign up to receive CCI e-News to ensure they are notified of the opportunity to apply.

Application Procedure
The official job poster and application form will be on the Public Service of Canada website, and must be completed and submitted online. Information on how to apply for a job in the federal public service is provided on the site.

Application Requirements
When submitting their online application, candidates will need to include:

  • a résumé
  • a list of the courses they have completed as well as any courses they are currently taking or will be taking during the academic year
  • a covering letter (maximum 200 words) that describes their recent conservation experience
  • contact information for three references

Candidates who pass the first screening will be asked to submit the following additional information:

  • Conservation interns — a portfolio of three recent treatments for which they have been responsible. Each treatment must be described in no more than four pages (exclusive of photos). Photos should have descriptive captions and be relevant to the treatment. The submission should be in 12-point font (or larger) with at least 1-inch margins on each page and single line spacing. The name of the supervisor or mentor must be included for each treatment project and the candidate’s role and contributions to the project should be clear. The portfolio submission will be used to assess the candidate’s knowledge and ability as outlined in the statement of merit criteria, and as one input for assessment of their written communication skills.
  • Conservation science interns — examples of publications or reports the candidate has written.
