Heritage Facility Planning l

Module Synopsis

This workshop examines the planning involved in the redevelopment or creation of heritage facilities. It covers the various parts of the planning process: market analysis, program options, role of collections, space requirements, site selection, staffing, and budgets. It also deals with setting priorities, what information is needed to make decisions, assigning human resources for the planning process, and use of consultants.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • understand the planning process so as to be better able to manage it
  • create a more useful terms of reference which will lead to better development studies
  • consider various facility options and their relative implications for resource requirements
  • integrate collection preservation and collection management issues into a strategic plan

Define your market, evaluate program selection options, and undertake comparative analysis.  Plan your programming relevant to your market segment and outreach targets.

Collection Preservation Profile Definition
Resolve collection demands from the programming definition.

Strategic Plan and Financing
Integrate the programming, collection preservation, and facility profiles into a strategic plan.  Develop operating and capital cost scenarios and conduct fundraising analysis for sources of financial assistance.

Target Audience

Board and staff members of heritage and cultural organizations contemplating new or significant renovations or undertaking strategic long-term planning; staff of government or other funding agencies that receive related funding applications or are tasked with assisting such organizations to realize such plans.
