Call for Contributions Deadline : November 1, 2010

Contributions are invited for Symposium 2011 – Adhesives and Consolidants for Conservation: Research and Applications. This symposium, hosted by the Canadian Conservation Institute in partnership with Library and Archives Canada, will be held in Ottawa, Canada, from October 17 to 21, 2011.

Adhesives and consolidants are important components of almost every conservation treatment. Symposium 2011 will bring together conservators and scientists from around the world to share their practical and theoretical knowledge about the use of adhesives and consolidants in all areas of conservation. The program will include a mix of lectures, posters, tours, and demonstrations, along with stimulating discussions. The information presented at the symposium will help participants to make better-informed choices of adhesives and consolidants for treatment applications.

Papers and Posters

Papers and posters are sought on the following topics for all areas of conservation:

suitability of adhesive and consolidant treatments — ethics and decision analysis new adhesives and consolidants, and their applications in conservation stability of adhesives and consolidants — aging and testing new techniques to characterize and identify adhesives, consolidants, and aging effects better understanding of adhesive/substrate interactions and how to optimize bonds innovative ways to apply adhesives and consolidants or to control their properties innovative treatments using adhesives and consolidants

properties and application of ancient or traditional adhesives — a new twist on the old innovative joint design assessment of old adhesive and consolidant treatments and risk analyses for new treatments adhesive removal application of adhesive and consolidant treatments on uniquely Canadian objects — problems and solutions innovative and unusual solutions when adhesives and consolidants cannot be used

Papers presented at the symposium will be limited to 20 minutes, and may be in either English or French. Simultaneous translation will be provided. Posters may be presented in English and/or French.

Demonstrations

Demonstrations in English or French are invited on various adhesive techniques (e.g. preparing and applying adhesives or backings, removing adhesives), new products, new joint designs, etc. Demonstrations will be presented as part of a designated Demonstration Day on Friday, October 21, 2011, during which participants may visit multiple presentations and interact with demonstrators. Each demonstration should be approximately 30 minutes, and will be given several times throughout the day.

Following the symposium, the full text of all papers will be published on the CCI website in the language of submission. Bilingual summaries of each paper, poster, and demonstration will also be provided.

Submission Procedure

All submissions should include:

the speaker's name, affiliation and contact information (postal address, e-mail address, and telephone and fax numbers) a short biography (max. 150 words) the title of the presentation, poster, or demonstration

whether the contribution is for a paper, poster, or demonstration an abstract of 500 words requirements for any specialized materials or equipment (for demonstrations)

All abstracts must be received by November 1, 2010

Assessment and Acceptance Criteria

All abstracts will be assessed by the Program Committee. Selection for inclusion in the program will be based on the following criteria:

Does the submission address one or more of the suggested topics or a topic of equal importance and interest? Does it meet the overall intention of the symposium? Is it original (i.e. never presented or published elsewhere)?

Is it innovative? Does the information benefit a broad range of conservation professionals? Does the topic help to balance representation among various disciplines?

The selection process will be completed by December 15, 2010, at which time successful applicants will be notified and provided with detailed guidelines for preparing their paper, poster, or demonstration.

The complete written text of all accepted papers must be submitted by March 31, 2011.
